Intellectual property management in the context of enforcing commitments on intellectual property of EVFTA

In recent years, Vietnam has actively participated in significant Free Trade Agreements (FTAs) that have had a major impact on the economy and the intellectual property system, such as the Free Trade Agreement between Vietnam and the European Union (EVFTA) in 2019. These new FTAs specifically emphasize intellectual property rights, demonstrating the importance of intellectual property assets.

As part of the “Technical Assistance for the ARISE+ Vietnam Program” project – “Enhancing Knowledge of Intellectual Property Management for Vietnamese Enterprises in the Context of Implementing Chapter 12 of EVFTA,” sponsored by the European Union (EU) and implemented by DAI Global Austria, the FTU Innovation and Incubation Center (FIIS) successfully organized the workshop “Intellectual Property Management in the Context of Enforcing Commitments on Intellectual Property of the Vietnam-EU Free Trade Agreement” on December 7, 2023. Dr. Ngo Dac Thuan presented on issues related to industrial property rights (industrial designs and patents) in the EVFTA Agreement.

During the workshop, Dr. Thuan shared two main topics: (1) Basis and process for identifying and determining industrial property rights objects and (2) What Vietnamese businesses need to pay attention to regarding industrial designs and patents in the EVFTA Agreement to avoid risks in business operations. The value of intangible assets is becoming increasingly important and brings many benefits to businesses. To export goods abroad, enterprises need to ensure the protection of brands, trademarks, industrial designs, patents, trade secrets, and geographical indications.

The workshop attracted the participation of experts, functional agency officials, and experienced lawyers in negotiating FTAs, along with representatives from businesses. They shared practical knowledge, values, and issues to be aware of and proposed suggestions to help businesses integrate more deeply into the supply chain and create global value. The workshop was a great success.
